Some of the most beautiful woods are also the hardest to work with. Case in point, olive wood. In woodworking terms it is unstable. It moves, warps and cracks, making it rather unpredictable at times.

So give it time, let it do what it will through drying and then a long period of acclimatization to your shop. Only once settled, begin the work. Too soon and your work will not stand the test of time.

With care, creativity and some work, one can indeed make fine products with such material. I recently found myself with a  live edge Italian olive wood slab that has a twist. Such beautiful colour and grain patterns. Rather than try to force the wood to do what I want, I decided to work with it’s character. The twist … what if I left it in? I decided to do just that, and compensate with custom welded differential length steel legs.

I chose an environmentally friendly, low voc epoxy and added colour. I chose ocean blue metallic adding to the woods natural mediterranean feel.

The twist adds an interesting visual effect as the console table stands solidly with all legs level yet has a slight twist, barely noticeable, as if an optical illusion.

The final piece is gorgeous, befitting of such a proud wood.
